Internet Assigned Numbers Authority(IANA)

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is housed at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute, and manages much of the Internet Protocol assignments in support of the ICANN. It was run by Jon Postel, one of the key people who helped administer the Internet from its beginning, until he passed away in 1998.

Among other things, IANA has the responsibility for ensuring that Internet parameters and protocol values are assigned uniquely and correctly. An exhaustive list of these parameters and protocols can be found at the Protocol Numbers and Assignment Services web site.
